Boston Neighborhood Network Television (BNN) is a nationally recognized community media center that operates Boston's two public access cable television channels: BNN's News and Information Channel 9, and BNN's Community Access Channel 23. BNN provides training and access to state-of-the-art digital media tools for media arts training and distribution of community programming.
BNN, in partnership with Urban Edge Housing Corporation, has embarked on a building campaign to renovate the former MBTA Power Station in Egleston Square, Roxbury to create a vibrant, new, LEED-certified community media center. In the fall of 2007, BNN will consolidate our two existing facilities at our new home, thereby expanding BNN's outreach and services. Our goal in our new home is to empower Boston residents as well as arts, cultural and educational organizations to share information and resources with the community. The consolidation of our facilities will result in long-term budget savings and sustainability for the organization.
Built in 1909, the Power Station converted power for the elevated transit line until the latter's relocation in 1986. Since then, this historic structure has remained vacant. BNN is working with Urban Edge — in continuation of its 15-year effort to revitalize Egleston Square — and with a team of
experienced professionals to preserve the building's historical character; to bring it back to life with 21st-century technology; and to implement green building strategies, both throughout the construction process and for the long-term.Extensive public and private contributions have already been committed for this project ($1,100,000 of a $2 million building campaign), including grant support from the City of Boston, the Mabel Louise Riley Foundation and Citizens Bank.
In the fall of 2007 BNN will "Turn on the Power" in this historic building, to the lasting benefit of the people of Roxbury and the City of Boston.
